About Blaine

Born and raised in Frederick County, Blaine R. Young has been married to his wife Karen for over 12 years. Blaine and Karen are the proud parents of two adult children and two school-aged children.

Blaine and his three brothers, Brad, Brian and Alex are the children of Ron and Carol Young.

Blaine learned the importance of education from a very young age from both of his parents. His father was a schoolteacher for many years before getting into local and state politics. While Blaine’s mother Carol worked for over 40 years as a teacher and principal for Frederick County Public Schools.

After high school, Blaine wanted to attend college in Maryland and first received an Associates Degree from Frederick Community College before receiving his degree in Mass Communication from Frostburg State University.

Blaine’s father Ron was the mayor of The City of Frederick from 1974-1990. As a result of his father’s political career, Blaine was exposed to politics and met many political leaders from across the state at an early age.

At age 23, Blaine followed in his father’s footsteps and entered the world of local politics as Chairman of the Democratic Party of Frederick County from 1995 to 1999.

In 1998, at age 26, Blaine was elected as the second youngest Alderman in the history of The City of Frederick, serving until 2002. Blaine was a leader in pushing for and passing two tax decreases while serving the resident of the City of Frederick. Despite being voted “Favorite Politician” three years in a row by the readers of Frederick Magazine, Blaine decided to retire from political office at the age of 30 and moved to Monrovia, Maryland.

Upon leaving public office, Blaine announced in 2002 that he was switching political party affiliation from Democratic to Republican. As a Blue Dog Democrat and fiscal conservative, Blaine grew increasingly uneasy with the direction of the Democratic Party. “The party left me. I didn’t leave the party. The Republican Party better fit with my beliefs in limited government and lower taxes,” according to Blaine.

In March 2010, because of a vacant seat on the Frederick County Board of County Commissioners, Blaine was appointed as a Commissioner to serve until the end of the term in November 2010.

Blaine decided to run to serve a full term as an elected member of the Board of County Commissioners because, as he says, “I was tired of sitting on the sidelines and watching the county I love be taken in directions that I knew were harmful for the taxpayers of Frederick.”

Blaine led a slate of Republican candidates that swept the election. Blaine received the highest number of votes in the election and as a result, became the President of the Frederick County Board of County Commissioners.

Blaine has never been one to just coast along with the status quo, instead, Blaine likes to “stir the pot.”  Blaine believes strongly in challenging citizens to reevaluate the role of government in our lives and is committed to redefining the role government.

“From the local all the way to the federal level, politicians and voters alike need to remember that our founding fathers build this country on the simple principle that our government should always be a government by the people and for the people,” Blaine says.

Blaine is a strong believer that “we the people” can always make better choices for ourselves than government ever can. “It’s wrong when government starts telling people what to do and how to do it,” says Blaine, adding, “The idea that government knows best and that government can and should take care of everything is a dangerous ideology that has really taken hold in the last 50 years.”

According to Blaine, the pioneering spirit that built this country would have never happened if our forefathers had to deal with the level of government intrusion that we face today.

In 2001 Blaine launched a local talk-radio program focused on local and state issues on 930WFMD called Frederick’s Forum that aired every Saturday morning.

Blaine has owned and operated Interstate Mobile Advertising since 2006. Interstate Mobile Advertising specializes in mobile marketing and advertising services.

Since 2007 Blaine has been a co-owner of Yellow Cab of Frederick, Mount Airy, Brunswick and Thurmont.

Blaine knows firsthand the difficulties and frustrations of dealing with the multiple layers of rules and regulations that are piled on small business owners by local and state agencies across Maryland. “There is so much repetition of services, rules and regulations in Maryland that it is not the most welcoming place for small business owners,” according to Blaine. “One of the reasons I got back into politics is to try to reduce the level of regulations and help make Maryland a much more inviting place for small business owners.”
